The SAMAs are here again and the full list of nominees has been released. The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) announced on the 6th July that the awards show will now be a virtual experience because of lockdown regulations and social distancing norms. To support the move, the show will be streamed on a Vodacom platform, My Muse, and also on DsTV’s Mzansi Magic over five nights between 3 and 7 August 2020 at 21.30 in 30-minute episodes, except for the last night which will be a forty-five-minute grand finale.
The organisation has now made available a full list of the nominations for SAMA26, and also given us the shortlist for the two categories that are up for public vote. I’ve noted my misgivings with the SA’s biggest award show previously, but it has come as a disappointment that some of these issues continue to plague the awards. The 26th Annual SAMA General Rules outline the rules governing the administration of the awards and how these processes are overseen, but still, there are discrepancies between the rules and the nominations announced.
While the rules state that “All recordings (singles and albums) submitted for the 26th Annual SA Music Awards must have been commercially released (in other words first made available for purchase) in South Africa during the period 01 February 2019 to 31 January 2020 (“the entry period”),” categories like Record of the Year and Music Video of the Year are adjudicated on cumulative airplay between the 01 March 2019 to the 28th February 2020. This means that while tracks like Nasty C’s “SMA” was commercially released on the 6th July 2018, it’s up for a SAMA for both ROTY and MVOTY in 2020 because of the cumulative airplay rule. AKA’s “Jika” was also commercially released on the 15th June 2018 but has both ROTY and MVOTY nominations in 2020 because of the cumulative airplay rule.
Cumulative airplay is also a hotly contested topic because the airplay mentioned is limited to radio airplay, with Radiomonitor’s source data determining the shortlist. With radio airplay being dominated by major labels and long-standing accusations of the radio industry’s “payola” practices, this limits who gets to be part of the shortlist from the get-go.
Makhadzi’s “Matorokisi”, Master KG’s “Jerusalema” and Sho Madjozi’s “John Cena” also didn’t make the cut for the two biggest awards. While the rules state that “Music Video of the year category will be adjudicated based the most played music videos sourced from RiSA Audio Visual Licensing NPC,” one wonders how “Jerusalem” with over 40 million views on Youtube didn’t get a SAMA nod.
